Smoke & Soot Cleanup in Spring Hill, FL

Call (352) 678-7470

Smoke and soot residues vary depending on what burned and the conditions of the fire. Some are dry and powdery; others are sticky, smeary or hard to see. Different residues and materials may require different cleaning methods, so effective cleanup starts with identifying the residue and the surfaces it has affected.

Types of smoke and soot residue

  • Dry smoke residue often comes from fast, hot fires burning materials such as wood and paper. It tends to be powdery and can settle into cracks and porous materials.
  • Wet or oily smoke residue often comes from slower, smoldering fires and burning plastics or other synthetic materials. It can be sticky and smeary, with a strong odor.
  • Protein residue comes from cooking fires and burned food. It can be nearly invisible yet discolor paint and finishes and carry a strong, lingering odor, so it calls for cleaning methods suited to protein residue rather than general soot cleaning.
  • Puff-back residue results from a malfunctioning furnace or other fuel-burning appliance and can spread fine soot through a room or a larger part of the building.

The residue type, the surfaces affected and the conditions determine the cleaning approach.

How we clean smoke and soot

There is no single sequence for every fire. Depending on the residue, the material and the conditions, cleaning methods may include:

  • HEPA vacuuming, where appropriate, to help remove loose residue
  • Dry cleaning sponges (often called dry chemical sponges), where appropriate, to help lift loose soot from surfaces before any wet cleaning
  • Material-compatible wet cleaning, where appropriate, for walls, ceilings, cabinets, trim and hard floors
  • On-site contents cleaning, where appropriate, for furniture and hard goods that can be cleaned; see Fire damage cleanup for our contents scope

Some surfaces and materials may not clean to an acceptable condition and may need to be replaced. Repair and reconstruction work that requires a contractor license is performed by an appropriately licensed contractor of your choosing.

Persistent odor may require additional odor-control steps after residue removal; see Smoke odor removal.

When smoke or soot may have affected HVAC components, evaluation and any required cleaning or repair are handled by an appropriate licensed HVAC contractor.

Before you clean

Wiping, scrubbing or applying household cleaners before the residue and the surface have been identified can spread, smear or set some residues. Until the appropriate cleaning method is determined, avoid disturbing soot-covered surfaces unnecessarily. If you are unsure whether something should be cleaned yet, call us and we can talk it through.
